Garlic Smashed Potatoes Recipes

Variations on a favourite comfort food that are super easy, creamy and delicious!

Here are a few suggestions for ‘switching-up’ this old favourite:

Garlic Smashed Potatoes with Cream Cheese

I threw this one together with leftover potatoes while making my Bacon, Cheese and Potato Pie:

  • Use just enough water to cover the potatoes, and throw in a couple tablespoons of finely chopped garlic, a bit of finely chopped onion, salt and black pepper; boil until just soft
  • Use a small strainer to drain the potatoes
  • Mash potatos down just to break them up a bit
  • Add a dollop of butter and a cup or so of cream cheese
  • Add fresh ground black pepper and salt to taste
  • Hand mash and mix until mixture is nice and creamy, adding more cream cheese if desired

Roasted Garlic Smashed Potatoes

Tip:

Garlic Smashed Potatoes make a great top layer for a Shepherds Pie

  • Rub a whole garlic bud with a bit of olive oil, wrap in foil and bake in 350 degree oven 20 minutes or until soft
  • Break up your cooked potatoes, mash your usual way or use cream cheese as above
  • Squeeze the roasted garlic cloves out of the skins into the potatoes
  • Add salt and pepper to taste
  • Mash until you have the desired creaminess

Brie and Garlic Mashed Potatoes – try this extra creamy variation

Garlic Smashed Potatoes are a nice variation on your typical mashed potato side dish for special occasions.

Use garlic smashed potatoes for your Shepherds Pie topping: spread the potatoes over the top of your beef mixture, top it off with some fresh grated parmesan cheese, dollop with a couple pads of butter and return the Shepherds Pie to the oven to brown for about 10 to 15 minutes.
