Cookbooks for the Culinary Xenophile
For a culinary xenophile, my library of cookbooks is quite small (a necessity for a traveller), but with a good balance of functional and inspirational:
- a couple of very good food reference books,
- a few of beautifully illustrated cookbooks covering a range of cuisines around the world, with information about the food culture of countries and regions and glossaries of the more exotic ingredients, and
- a few books devoted mainly to recipes for specific types of food.
Favourites
The first in my list of favourites was a gift from a friend after I had completed a Vietnamese cooking class twenty years ago. If there's a fledgling chef or a culinary xenophile in your life, one of these cookbooks would make a great gift:
- The Encyclopedia of Asian Cooking (Jeni Wright)
- The Foodlover's Atlas of the World (Martha Rose Shulman)
- Thailand: the Food and the Lifestyle (Judy Williams, Food of the World series)
- Vietnamese Cooking: Recipes My Mother Taught Me (Anh Thu Stuart)
- Noodles the New Way (Sri Owen)
- The Penguin Companion to Food (Alan Davidson, published in hard cover as The Oxford Companion to Food)
- The New Food Lover's Companion (Sharon Tyler Herbst)
On My Wishlist
I supplement my cookbook collection and
recipe box with lots of online research for free information about different kinds of food and cooking tips as my interest is peaked, and then read book reviews at online bookstores before investing in a new book.
These food reference and cook books have also received positive reviews:
- Extending the Table: A World Community Cookbook (Joetta Handrich Schlabach, Kristina Mast Burnett)
- Lonely Planet World Food Guides
- The Curry Book: Memorable Flavors and Irresistable Recipes From Around the World (Nanci McDermott)
- Take it With You Guides by Linda Bladholm:
- The Indian Grocery Store Demystified
- The Asian Grocery Store Demystified
- Latin and Carribean Grocery Stores Demystified
